Most introductory art history courses are surveys: high-level information about many works with an emphasis on memorising titles, artists, dates, and periods or styles.
A walk through the National Gallery can feel just as overwhelming and superficial. You see masterpiece after masterpiece, with hardly any time to absorb details about any one painting.
I recommend taking a different approach: spend some time before your visit to get to know a handful of paintings intimately.
Getting to know a few paintings in advance will provide purpose and structure to your visit. The insights you gain will also help you to better understand all of the paintings you see.
